Ben joined Czarnikow’s analysis team in 2016 on a year long internship before returning to the University of Bath to complete an Economics Degree. Since re-joining in August 2018, Ben has led the data insights team in expanding the range and quality of data available internally and to clients through Czapp. Ben spent 3 months in Czarnikow’s Singapore and Bangkok offices to expand his knowledge of the region and help roll out the latest data processes. He is now also responsible for the Sugar Market View published each week on Czapp.

WTO Rules Against Indian Sugar Subsidies

  • India’s subsidies for sugar production are in breach of World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules.
  • The country will therefore refrain from offering subsidies in 2022.
  • Sugar prices are close to a level where India can export without a subsidy, though.

  • Raw sugar exports are now viable at 19.9 c/lb, whilst white sugar exports are workable at 500 USD/mt.
  • This means Indian white sugar exports are viable at today’s prices.
  • Domestic sugar prices have in India have dropped again to 34 INR/KG.

Can India Export Sugar Today? 7th October 2021

  • Indian raw sugar exports should be workable above 20.6c/lbs for raws and 516 USD/mt for whites.
  • This is 0.6 c/lbs above the March No.11 and just 6 USD/mt above the No.5
  • We think India can export 7m tonnes of sugar in the coming season, 4m tonnes raws and 3m tonnes whites.
