Colombia is the fourth-largest sugar producer in Central & South America, and is one of the world’s few countries to make sugar year-round.

Almost all sugar made in the country comes from the Cauca Valley near Cali and is white sugar.

This means the logistics for moving sugar to the rest of the country can be challenging; cities like Cartagena and Barranquilla are more than 24-hour drive away.

Per capita sugar consumption is broadly stable at around 35kg per person, which is a normal level for sugar-producing country with Colombia’s GDP and urbanisation.

Colombia operates a complex duty structure (Arancel) to regulate imports and domestic prices.
