Uttar Pradesh (UP) is the largest sugar cane growing state in India, and also the most populous state.

What happens in UP is therefore critically important for the wider sugar market.

Sugar mills in UP now produce more than 12m tonnes of sugar each season, following the introduction of a new highyielding cane variety.

Uttar Pradesh’s large sugar production means the state is a surplus sugar producer.

The state is landlocked and so it’s challenging for local mills to export sugar onto the world market, and it directs much of its surplus to deficit areas in India instead.
