Australia is one of the top raw sugar suppliers in the world, typically exporting 3.5m tonnes each year.

Raw sugar is produced from cane crushed at 22 mills, 19 of which are based in Queensland.

Four refineries then process some of this raw sugar into refined for domestic consumption.

Australia consumes around 1.1m tonnes of sugar a year; its population is rising so per capita sugar consumption is decreasing.

The remaining raw sugar is exported, predominantly to East Asian countries.
