What have you been up to lately?

We are entering the season when rice is harvested and dried. Golden rice and green sugarcane leaves complement each other.

I heard this week that the police were asking for nearby surveillance video, and I knew that many farmers’ rice had been stolen. The theft just happened, and now the dried rice has suffered rain. It is a double whammy.

Typhoon Sanba hit in mid-October. This year, the cane area has come up against three typhoons “Saola”, “Haikui” and “Sanba”. The typhoon has brought ample rainfall to sugarcane, so a bumper harvest is a certainty.

Of course, there have been lots of pictures of sugar cane falling due to the typhoon, and my sugar cane is no exception. But my cane was not so bad — I didn’t even need to hire someone to lift it back up.

What stage is your crop at?

Because of the good rainfall this year, the sugar cane is still growing but it is not fully ripe yet. However, in a few days, the sugar cane will be ready for harvest, and we are ready for it. I bought a new second-hand truck to transport sugar cane. Other trucks have been repainted and given a new look.

I dug up pictures of the sugar cane at this time last year, and the contrast with this year’s crop is striking.

All that remains is to prepare the land for the new planting.

I have the last 29 mu* of bottomland that has been stacked with stripped topsoil for four years. Not only is there no sugar cane harvested, but nearly 40 tonnes of sugarcane equivalent rent are wasted each year.

Now all the depressions, ponds and deep pits in my sugarcane base have been filled up, and there is no longer any value in keeping it. Since the cane crushing has not yet started, we will flatten the land and prepare it for planting!

Over the past few years, we have used the same plot, the same cane variety, the same precipitation and the same management. We also have the fertile properties and soil retention ability of the planting area paved with stripped topsoil. In these few years, the sugarcane height is at least 1 meter higher than it was in the original soil area.

Anything else?

Autumn is a season of crop harvesting and happy events. I attended another wedding — congratulations to the couple and thanks for the delicious feast!
