Recent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have once again highlighted the importance of supply chain resilience. While the immediate focus is often on oil prices, the wider implications for PET producers, converters and brand owners can be equally significant.
The Middle East remains a critical region for global petrochemicals and polyester value chains. Any disruption affecting shipping routes, energy infrastructure or regional trade can quickly ripple through the wider packaging value chain. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints, handling around a quarter of global seaborne oil trade, while ongoing disruption across the Red Sea continues to reshape shipping patterns and freight economics.

When shipping becomes slower and more expensive, the effects do not stop at the port. They ripple through polymer supply chains, affecting cost, availability, and planning across the packaging industry.

For PET producers, one challenge is understanding how trade flows could change in response to this disruption. When shipping routes become less efficient or more expensive, material looks for alternative destinations. Suppliers adjust export strategies, buyers diversify sourcing, and regional supply-demand balances shift.
This is part of a broader trend. McKinsey notes that “global trade is not retreating but reconfiguring,” with companies increasingly redesigning supply chains around resilience, diversification and risk management rather than focusing solely on cost optimisation, which had previously been a key driver.
Sustainability Under Strain
For the packaging industry, this has important sustainability implications.
Longer shipping routes increase transport emissions. Emergency sourcing decisions can reduce supply chain efficiency. While this is ongoing, uncertainty around virgin resin supply can strengthen the business case for regional recycling infrastructure and local rPET production capacity.

For responsible PET packaging producers, sustainability is not only about reducing environmental impact. It is also about building supply chains that are transparent, resilient and capable of supporting long-term customer commitments. Brand owners still need to meet recycled content targets, carbon reduction goals, and regulatory requirements, regardless of geopolitical developments.
For the PET industry, resilient supply chains, trusted partnerships and a clear understanding of global trade flows are becoming just as important as cost competitiveness.
