The terms “demurrage” and “detention” refer to mechanisms used by the container shipping industry to ensure goods move efficiently around the world. They encourage all parties to work in a smooth and timely manner, while punishing those who don’t with fines. But the supply chain snarls of the past few years have revealed some vulnerabilities in the system.

Sara joined CZ in 2021 as a commodity journalist after a brief period covering commodities and leveraged finance at several London-based new outlets. In the four years prior, Sara lived in Mexico City, where she worked as a bilingual journalist and editor across several key industries, including mining, oil and gas, and health.
