Today, these advancements impact the logistics of moving cargo between hubs, the physical safety and security of port areas and equipment, real-time communications between cargo vessels and shoreside authorities and the daily duties of port personnel on the ground.

Europe’s leading container ports are spearheading this transition by embedding new digital architectures directly into their infrastructure.

Rotterdam Trial Demonstrates Future of Autonomous Shipping

In June 2026, the Port of Rotterdam served as the testing ground for a major milestone in autonomous navigation – the successful execution of autonomous inland container shipping.

The conventionally powered inland vessel, MS Letitia (operated by the HTS Group), travelled independently through some of the busiest waterways in Europe. The ship navigated safely among regular maritime traffic, sailing from Amaliahaven on the Maasvlakte, through Europoort and the Nieuwe Waterweg, to its final destination at Waalhaven in Rotterdam. During this live demonstration, the ship’s integrated digital systems independently handled complex and essential manoeuvres.

While the onboard skipper remained ultimately responsible and retained the ability to intervene at any moment, the system handled the operational legwork, providing advanced navigational and decision-making support.

As freight throughput grows, autonomous sailing can improve the flexibility, efficiency and reliability of inland waterway transport. And by moving container, bulk and liquid cargo more energy-efficiently via rivers rather than congested highways, this automation reduces pressure on the regional road network.

Automated Yard Logistics and Connected Infrastructure

Further down the North Sea coast, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges has piloted the deployment of autonomous vehicles. To streamline operations, the port authority is systematically integrating self-driving vehicles to manage terminal activities, aiming to reshape how industrial sites handle internal cargo and personnel routing.

By introducing autonomous transport systems, the Belgian port reduces human exposure to high-risk industrial zones while simultaneously improving vehicle dispatching and positioning. The digital framework behind these vehicles communicates seamlessly with centralised terminal management systems.

Port workers can shift away from repetitive, manually driven transit toward high-level remote monitoring and tech-driven oversight. These automated vehicles are engineered to navigate heavily trafficked, constrained terminal paths safely, relying on a network of sensors and real-time communication feeds to prevent accidents and maintain continuous operational flow.

Hamburg Goes Digital

In May 2026, the Port of Hamburg announced the successful completion of a major cross-port initiative to digitalise the container release process across Germany’s North Sea ports, completely replacing the traditional PIN-based system with the Secure Release Order process.

The system closes security gaps by replacing numerical PINs with an encrypted digital right of collection, passed securely between parties through an application. More than 700,000 digital releases have already been processed securely this year.

Backed by an amendment to the Port Security Act, this digital standard enables North Sea ports to take a unified approach to combating drug smuggling and data breaches, directly protecting terminal staff and operations while improving cargo availability, planning reliability and data quality.

The Future of Ports Is Digital

Although the maritime sector has traditionally been slow to embrace structural operational change, new innovations are starting to permeate the shipping industry in Europe.

As these technologies scale and become more readily available, they will become the industry standard and an increasingly important source of competitive advantage. Port authorities, terminal operators, shipping lines and freight forwarders that adapt quickly to these digital ecosystems stand to gain a significant edge, while those that fail to keep pace risk becoming obsolete in an increasingly connected global market.
